Death, when we come to consider it closely, is the true goal of our existence. I have formed during the last few years such close relations with this best and truest friend of mankind that his image is not only no longer terrifying to me but is indeed very soothing and consoling.
  Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

What Are Memorial Societies?

Memorial Societies are non-profit, non-sectarian organizations that offer members many benefits including funerals at generally lower prices.

There are three societies in B.C.

Memorial Society of British Columbia is the largest, with over 200,000 members, founded in 1956.  www.memorialsocietybc.org

The People's Memorial Society of B.C. and the Vancouver Island Memorial Society, both founded in 1972.

The Memorial Society Directory lists local phone numbers.

How Do Memorial Societies Work?

You join the society to pre-plan your own funeral or the funeral of another.  You pay $10 to $20 for a lifetime membership and complete two forms: an  application for a membership card and an arrangement form on which you choose what you want and don't want for your funeral.

You may pre-pay your funeral costs or merely register your choices which are kept on file to be made available to your family upon your death.  (The societies recommend you also discuss your choices with your family and keep written instructions as an attachment to your will.)

How Much Do Society Funerals Cost?

A price list accompanies your application form.  The Memorial Society of British Columbia provides a detailed price list that includes specific service costs and items such as cremations, urns and caskets. Information: www.memorialsocietybc.org
